
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine Ormond, who works as a lab technician as well as John Ormond. Ormond is the second of five children to her parents. Her first performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted attention. Then, she went to Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After a year in art school she was transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art which she attended until 1988, when she graduated. Ormond first appeared on British TV in the show Traffik, about the illegal heroin trade from the far East to the streets of Europe. Ormond played the drug-addicted son of the leading character, a Home Office minister working to combat heroin importation. This was her first film role and was praised by the critics as a success.
